Mountain Horsemanship: Veterinary Care and Horsepacking in the Wilderness

This deluxe pack trip covers all the essentials of of horsepacking in the wilderness - with the Golden Trout Wilderness of the High Sierras as your laboratory. Learn about equipment, emergency veterinary care, feeding and managing livestock in the backcountry, and more. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine clinicians will update guests on current and exciting topics for all equine enthusiasts.

Location
Originating from Horseshoe Meadows, this course travels through the Golden Trout Wilderness of the High Sierra, near Sequoia National Park.

Format
The program consists of series of informal but structured presentations and discussions spread through a wilderness horseback camping experience. Lecture and Discussion Topics

• Wilderness conduct of people and equines- Leave No Trace
• Feeding and management of horses and mules in the backcountry
• Case Discussions-when to seek veterinary intervention at home and when to refer/take to a clinic
• Veterinary Lectures what’s new in equine internal medicine
• Gastric Ulcers
• Neonatal care/normal foaling & Common neonatal diseases
• Fever of unknown origin
• Common skin tumors
• Concerns with donkeys
• Insulin dysregulation management
• Clinical nutrition
• Treating sick or hurt horse in the wilderness

Laboratory Topics

• Packing equipment, making loads, hitches, leading strings of mules
• Backcountry shoeing
• Intramuscular/IV injections
